دوران کودکی صائب در عصر اقتدار شاه عباس صفوی در اصفهان سپری شد. او در همین شهر درس خواند و در همان اوانِ جوانی به شاعری شهرت یافت. وقتی شاه‌عباس در سال 1007 خورشیدی،درگذشت (1629 میلادی) صائب که هنوز گویا به مرز چهل سالگی نرسیده بود، در هند به سر می‌برد. در آن ایام هندوستان برای شعرای ایرانی جاذبة بسیار داشت، و هنگامی که ظفرخان فرماندار کشمیر، که خود ایرانی الاصل و شاعر بود با صائب رو به رو شد، به مصاحبت او دلگرم شد. و وقتی صائب هوایی ایران و دیدار پدر کرد، به او اجازة بازگشت به ایران را نداد. سه سال بعد از آن که صائب توانست به ایران بازگردد دیگر به هند برنگشت. او از شاه عباس دوم لقب ملک‌الشعرایی را گرفت. و او در انزوا در باغ خود در اصفهان روزگار به سر کرد. در این خانه، گاه دوستان و شیفتگانش به دیدارش می‌آمدند. صائب در 80 سالگی در اصفهان درگذشت. اشعار صائب هم‌چون نیما یوشیج، طرف‌داران و مخالفینی دارد. مخالفان شعر صائب می‌گویند که اعتبار شعر پیشینیان را ندارد، اما به قول ملک‌الشعرای بهار، گرچه در ایام صفویه شعر قدری نامرغوب شد، اما نه آنچنان است که شهرت دارد، بلکه شعرایی مانند فغانی، هلالی، طالب آملی، و صائب تبریزی پیداشدند که امروز ایران از داشتن نظیر هر یک محروم است!

Sāeb’s childhood was spent in Isfahan during the reign of Shah Abbas Safavid. He studied in this city and became famous as a poet in his youth. When Shah Abbas passed away in (1629 AD), Sāeb, who had apparently not yet reached the age of 40, was in India. In those days, India had a lot of attraction for Iranian poets, and when Zafar Khan, the governor of Kashmir, who was an Iranian-born poet himself, met Sāeb, he was encouraged to meet him. And when Sāeb would like to visit Iran and his father, he did not allow him to return to Iran. Three years after Saeb was able to return to Iran, he never returned to India. He received the title of Malik al-Shoarai from Shah Abbas II. And he lived in isolation in his garden in Isfahan. In this house, sometimes his friends and admirers came to visit him. Sāeb died in Isfahan at the age of 80. Like Nima Yoshij, Sāeb’s poems have supporters and opponents. Opponents of Saeb’s poetry say that it does not have the validity of the poetry of the predecessors, but according to Malek al-Shoarai Bahar, although during the Safavid era, poetry became somewhat inferior, but it is not as popular as it is, but poets such as Faghani, Hilali, Talib Amoli, and Sāeb Tabrizi were found who today Iran is deprived of having the likes of any of them!
